AMERIGROUP Foundation Announces Winners of 'Healthy Communities Art Project'
Date:6/17/2008

EDISON, N.J., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The AMERIGROUP Foundation announced the winners of its annual "Healthy Communities Art Project" during a special reception held on June 10 at its offices in Edison, N.J. Twelve New Jersey students had their artwork selected for this year's calendar and each received an iPOD shuffle.

The statewide project challenges students to recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle and promotes awareness of healthy eating, nutrition and exercise. Twelve schools were selected to participate in this year's project with a winner chosen from each school. The AMERIGROUP Foundation provided each school with art supplies and conducted workshops. Students were asked to illustrate what "healthy" means to them and their community. Drawings ranged from fruits and vegetables to pedestrian safety and the benefits of swimming and jumping rope.

This year's winners of the Healthy Communities Art Project are:

Lauren Barrett, Joseph R. Bolger Middle School, Keansburg

Brandon Bras, Marques de Lafayette School #6, Elizabeth

Matt Cole, Gateway School, Carteret

Janice Culmer, Cleveland School, Englewood

Andleeb Imran, St. Mary's Middle School, Rutherford

Connor McGinley, Beachwood Elementary School, Beachwood

Trina McFadden, Dr. Frank Napier Jr. School of Technology #4, Paterson

Adia Montgomery, Cathedral International, Asbury Park/Perth Amboy

Mayelin Santana, Dr. Martin Luther King School #6, Passaic

Rafael Soto, The Felician School for Exceptional Children, Lodi

Kayla Varlaro, Ocean Academy, Toms River

Jackson Weaver, Hoboken Charter School, Hoboken

The entries were evaluated by a panel of community judges including Sharon Clancy (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) and Robin Burgos (Passaic Family Head Start).

"All of the students who participated in this contest demonstrated a clear understanding of health issues affecting their communities, families and friends and produced some beautiful artwork," said Rachelle Graham, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, AMERIGROUP Community Care. "It was a great way for students to educate themselves on health issues facing the places where they live and learn."
