EDISON, N.J., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The AMERIGROUP Foundation announced the winners of its annual "Healthy Communities Art Project" during a special reception held on June 10 at its offices in Edison, N.J. Twelve New Jersey students had their artwork selected for this year's calendar and each received an iPOD shuffle.
The statewide project challenges students to recognize the importance
of a healthy lifestyle and promotes awareness of healthy eating, nutrition
and exercise. Twelve schools were selected to participate in this year's
project with a winner chosen from each school. The AMERIGROUP Foundation
provided each school with art supplies and conducted workshops. Students
were asked to illustrate what "healthy" means to them and their community.
Drawings ranged from fruits and vegetables to pedestrian safety and the
benefits of swimming and jumping rope.

Mayelin Santana, Dr. Martin Luther King School #6, Passaic
Rafael Soto, The Felician School for Exceptional Children, Lodi
Kayla Varlaro, Ocean Academy, Toms River
Jackson Weaver, Hoboken Charter School, Hoboken
The entries were evaluated by a panel of community judges including Sharon Clancy (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) and Robin Burgos (Passaic Family Head Start).
