AMA Honors Florida Senator Don Gaetz With Top Government Service Award
Date:3/2/2010

WASHINGTON, March 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Florida Senator Don Gaetz will be honored tonight with the American Medical Association's government service award for a member of a state legislature. The award is being presented as part of the AMA's National Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.

"Sen. Gaetz has been instrumental in advancing access to care and championing public health issues for Floridians, and the AMA is pleased to honor him with this award," said AMA Board Chair Rebecca J. Patchin, M.D. "He continues to work for health insurance reforms that benefit Florida patients and leads the charge against health care fraud in the state."

Sen. Gaetz was elected to the Florida Senate in 2006. He is the Chair of the Senate Committee on Health Regulation and serves as Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee on Social Responsibility and the Select Committee on Florida's Economy. He is currently spearheading an effort to ensure health insurance companies pay for routine health care for patients involved in clinical trials.

"Through the Nathan Davis Awards, the AMA salutes government officials who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve public health," said Dr. Patchin. "Award winners come from every branch of government service, and are a testament to the important role public officials play in creating and implementing health policy that benefits Americans."

Sen. Gaetz was nominated for the award by the Florida Medical Association and is one of nine honorees chosen this year to receive the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. The award, named for the founding father of the AMA, recognizes elected and career officials in federal, state or municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Dr. Nathan Davis Awards. Others being honored this year include Governor John F. Baldacci of Maine and Donna Christensen, M.D., delegate to Congress from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
