AHIP Statement on Senate Passage of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

WASHINGTON, April 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), today issued the following statement commending the Senate on the passage of H.R. 493 in the U.S. Senate:

"Individuals must not face discrimination on the basis of their genetic makeup. We applaud the Senate for passing this important legislation that prohibits discrimination and protects patients' genetic information from unauthorized use and disclosure. The Senate legislation and health insurance plans' programs and practices both reflect this fundamental principle.

"This landmark legislation preserves patients' access to high quality health care services in the emerging field of genetic medicine.
