AHIMA Statement Attributable to: Linda L. Kloss, MA, RHIA AHIMA Chief
CHICAGO, Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- "The American Health Information Management Association is excited to hear the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services plans to adopt ICD-10 Classification upgrades. We regard this as a significant step forward in the march toward the use of classification systems that reflect twenty-first century medical knowledge within a foreseeable timeframe. AHIMA is also hopeful that CMS can digest the responses to the proposed rule and promptly issue final rules in order for the healthcare industry to, at long last, get ICD-10 implementation rolling.
"However, while we wait for a final rule from CMS, there is much the healthcare industry can do to prepare for implementation and enjoy the benefits of using these advanced classification systems.
"Once implemented in the US, ICD-10 will significantly improve our nation's ability to provide information comparable to 21st century medicine and its current understanding of disease. Moreover, ICD-10 will better allow for the measurement of quality patient care and the international exchange of public health, pandemic, research information and information that allows for policy decisions related to healthcare and healthcare systems."
