ted his medical degree at Chicago Medical School, and master's degrees in community health sciences at the University of Illinois School of Public Health, and in health services administration at the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his medical training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and served with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He resides in Chicago, Ill., with his wife, Marianne Feitl.
