ABMS Selects Kevin B. Weiss, MD, MPH, as New President and CEO

air Cynda Ann Johnson, MD, MBA, said that the ABMS board selected Weiss based on his track record of accomplishments in improving healthcare, as well as his strong executive and personal qualities.

"On behalf of the entire organization, I want to express how delighted we are to have Kevin lead ABMS," said Johnson. "Our search for a new president was focused and thorough and our board is confident that Kevin's experience, proven leadership and passion for healthcare quality make him the right ABMS leader to advance physician certification programs that help achieve quality clinical outcomes in responsive, patient-focused settings."

Weiss' commitment to research and programs that advance healthcare quality has been recognized by key national leaders such as Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

"The work of ABMS is a natural complement to AHRQ's ongoing efforts to improve healthcare safety and quality," said Clancy. "I am pleased that Kevin will be leading ABMS in its vital task of ensuring physician proficiency and ongoing assessments."

Weiss is a professor of medicine in the Division of General Medicine and director of the Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He also directs the Midwest Center for Health Services and Policy Research located at Hines and Chicago Veterans Administration Medical Centers, and is a Board of Regents member of the American College of Physicians (ACP). In addition, Weiss currently serves on the Clinical Performance Measures Committee of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and represents ACP at the National Quality Forum (NQF) and the American Medical Association's (AMA) Physicians Consortium for Performance Improvement. He also serves on the National Quality Forum's (NQF) Consensus Standards Approval Committee, and Chairs the Performance Measures Committee of the AQA.
