AARP to Host Town Hall Meetings on Prescription Drug Marketing Reform
Date:6/24/2008

ALBANY, N.Y., June 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP will host a series of community town hall and tele-town hall meetings across New York State this summer and fall to address growing concerns about the cost of prescription drugs. The series will be convened through live meetings and teleconferences to inform AARP members and the public about prescription drug market reform efforts in New York State and the influence pharmaceutical companies have on those efforts.

"Now more than ever, New Yorkers of all ages are struggling to afford the high cost of prescription drugs and AARP is working to ensure that our members know what their legislators are and are not doing to reform how prescription drugs are marketed," said Lois Aronstein, AARP NY State Director. "New Yorkers need to say 'enough is enough'. It is time for the pharmaceutical industry to stop dictating prescription drug policy in our state and for our legislators to do what is best for the people."

The first set of town hall meetings will be held in Western New York, Central New York, the Capital Region, New York City and on Long Island. The town hall meetings will feature an array of rotating panelists. Invited to participate are experts from state and national consumer, medical, academic, public interest, and campaign finance experts.

In addition to the live town hall meetings held around the state, AARP's 2.7 million members in New York will also be able to participate in a series of town hall meetings from their own home. These tele-town hall meetings will provide New Yorkers with the opportunity to participate and ask questions via telephone.

Over 8,000 New Yorkers participated in AARP's first New York tele-town hall meeting last week. Participants heard from state and national experts about the status of prescription drug marketing reform legislation currently before the state legislature and had the opportunity to ask questions about the impact of passage of this legislation on their lives and their families.

"This technology is a great addition to our traditional town hall meetings, continued Aronstein. "Allowing the public to participate and ask questions is a critical part of public policy."

As part of its continuing efforts to bring down the cost of prescription drugs for all New Yorkers, AARP will be informing its 2.7 million members about how or whether their legislators voted on legislation to reform how prescription drugs are marketed in New York State.
