AARP Urges Senate to Move Forward on Health Care Reform

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP CEO Bill Novelli made the following statement about next Monday's vote on the health care reform bill, ABX 1 1 (Nunez & Perata) by the California State Senate Committee on Health:

"On behalf of AARP and its 3.3 million California members, we strongly urge the members of the State Senate Health Committee to pass ABX 1 1 when it comes up for a vote next Monday. ABX 1 1 represents a major step toward ensuring that every Californian has quality, affordable health care. The bill guarantees that every person can buy a health insurance policy, begins to contain health care costs and provides needed help to those who can't afford an insurance plan on their own. The alternative is the status quo, and we all know that is getting worse by the day.

"This bill is a giant step forward to provide health and financial security, not just for AARP's members, but for the millions of Californians without any health insurance. Comprehensive health care reform in America's most populous state can show the way to cover the 47 million uninsured in this country.

"We applaud the efforts of Governor Schwarzenegger, Speaker Nunez, President Pro Tem Perata and other members of the California Legislature for putting California on track for comprehensive health care reform. AARP implores the Senate to quickly complete work on this proposal and send it to the Governor for his signature."
