Date:7/31/2008

WASHINGTON, July 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Association of PPOs (AAPPO) today announced the kickoff of a six-part "short course" for PPO executives on strategies to improve the value of clinical care and health care benefits. The AAPPO Adding Value Initiative will inform AAPPO members and partner organizations about new approaches to improving chronic disease outcomes.

AAPPO President and CEO Karen Greenrose, commented, "We all know that chronic disease is a major cost driver in the health care industry. We also know that we can improve outcomes and get better results for our health care dollars if we promote wellness, encourage adherence and engage patients in their own care management. That's what this course is about."

Cutting-edge health care companies now use benefit design and patient engagement strategies to incent behaviors that result in better outcomes. By adopting innovative interventions, PPOs can "add value" to their management of chronic disease. AAPPO's value-added strategies will address a range of approaches that could be adopted by risk-bearing or non-risk PPOs and could be offered either independently or through collaboration with payers and other health care organizations.

AAPPO's "short course" webinar series features nationally known experts discussing key approaches to maximizing the value of health care interventions, with a focus on improving diabetes care.

Speakers in the Adding Value series include:

-- Information Driven Decision Making About Health and Wellness -- Speaker: D. W Edington, University of Michigan

-- What do Customers Want: Network, Pharmacy and Care Management Strategies to Increase Bang for the Buck -- Speaker: Jan Berger, MD, Senior Vice President, Caremark

-- Enhancing Adherence, Improving Outcomes: Strategies To Engage Patients in Healthy Behaviors -- Speaker: Neal Sofian, Resolution Health

-- Designing a Pharmacy Program to Support Chronic Disease Management Goals -- Speaker: Jack Mahoney, M.D., Pitney Bowes

Other topics will address the application of incentives, value based insurance design, and developing value-based products and services.

"This series will lay the foundation for PPO delivery of value-added activities around diabetes care and other chronic diseases. Value-driven health care and benefit design are the way of the future -- it puts purchasing power and incentives behind wellness approaches and evidence-based care. We're pleased to host national thought leaders in bringing this information to AAPPO members," said Greenrose.

The AAPPO Adding Value initiative is sponsored by sanofi-aventis. For more information on the series visit: http://www.aappo.org/AAPPO_VALUE/AV_01.cfm
