A Nutty Super Bowl Snacks Strategy Helps Keep Diets in Play
Date:1/27/2010

Super Bowl snacks offer the first big chance to fumble New Year's weight loss resolutions. Family-owned Superior Nut Company recommends strategies to help dieting Americans remain among the 20 percent who succeed.

(PRWEB) January 27, 2010 -- Even the football illiterate can appreciate good football party food. And even hardcore dieters can derail at the sight of tempting Super Bowl snacks, unless going in with a solid game plan.

  • Choose diet friendly snacks – Any variety of healthy nuts are considered dense foods, packing a good mix of vitamins and minerals. “All nuts have a rich flavor and taste, which tends to cut the craving,” said Hicham Chraibi, food scientist with Massachusetts-based Superior Nut Company. “They have a lot of fiber, which helps give you a full feeling.” Bonus: Healthy nuts like cashews, walnuts and pecans have been scientifically linked to greater overall well being, including a recent study linking nuts to lower risk of sudden heart disease-related deaths.
  • Drink water – Water brings a lot to the table by curbing appetite, hydrating the body and satisfying thirst much better than sugary alternatives like soda.
  • Use a smaller plate – A Cornell study, “Ice Cream Illusions,” shows there is truth to this psychological trick of satisfying the appetite with less by eating from a smaller plate. In fact, doing so can help a person eat up to 30 percent less, according to the study.
  • Host the party – Control over the menu means the ability to stick to diet-friendly snacks. Bonus: Party prep and house cleaning can be great exercise.
While a commitment to weight loss is among the most popular New Year’s resolutions, the Super Bowl offers one of the first opportunities to falter. In fact, research shows just over 80 percent of resolutions are forgotten by Valentine’s Day. But with a solid strategy, dieting Americans can stay on track through the Super Bowl and beyond.
