A Number of Factors Contribute to Rise in Drug Addiction for Middle-Aged Women, According to KLEAN Treatment Center

West Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) May 27, 2013

The professionals at KLEAN Treatment Center, which provides personalized assistance in beating drug and alcohol addiction, are issuing comment on a new study that looks at what is causing middle-aged women, many of whom are mothers, to rely on drugs and alcohol for comfort. The survey, conducted by Caron Treatment Centers, which is a nationally recognized non-profit that provides drug and alcohol addiction treatment, discovered that the top five contributing factors for mothers’ addiction included: stress or anxiety, troubles in romantic relationships, pressure from family or friends, traumatic experiences, and feelings of boredom.

Colleen Greene, who is a Caron alumni, mother of two, and the Chair of Caron’s National Alumni Leadership Council comments on the issue stating, “I kept telling myself that as long as everything looked perfect from the outside, everything would be okay. But it wasn’t. I was slowly dying and I’m certain that tragedy would have ensued if I’d continued on that path.”

The survey, which was conducted anonymously in April 2013 among 100 alumni who had received treatment from the Caron Treatment Centers Continuum of Care, found that 46 percent of respondents were between the ages of 46 and 55 and had a household income of more than $100,000. Seventy-eight percent of the women were married when they received treatment, and 74 percent had two or more kids. Eighty-eight percent of those surveyed explained that they abused alcohol in their own homes, as opposed to going to a bar. More than 44 percent abused prescription drugs, and 60 percent of respondents stated that they drove under the influence every week prior to beginning the recovery process.

Cheryl Knepper, who is a Vice President at Caron Treatment Centers, notes, “Women often tell me they knew they had a problem long before seeking a solution. Our survey reveals that many mothers carry a lot of shame, guilt, and denial, which prevents or delays them from seeking help. They are naturally concerned about leaving their children. However, those who do get help, along with their families, find their ability to parent greatly improves.”

Dr. Harris Stratyner, a Vice President at Caron Treatment Centers explains, “Addiction does not discriminate; however, there are unique issues women face in addiction, treatment, and recovery. Women’s distinctive physiology, mental health, life circumstances as well as hormones may affect their experience in addiction. Some common signs that you or someone you know may have a bigger issue with addiction include forgetfulness, abrupt change sin mood, changes in physical appearance, and the inability to control drinking in social situations.”

The team at KLEAN Treatment Center states, “It’s important to understand that addiction to drugs or alcohol is not a gender-specific problem; anyone who feels that they are struggling with these issues should seek professional help right away.”

KLEAN Treatment Center is a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Professionals. The group offers three locations where individuals can receive treatment. The clinical program at KLEAN involves individual sessions with qualified therapists, comprehensive group programs, and 24/7 residential treatment case management. Participants are also entitled to free lifetime aftercare.
