A Dangerous Kick-Off to Summer on the Water Prompts ABS Insurance Agency to Educate Missouri Boaters on Safety
Date:6/12/2013

Chesterfield, MO (PRWEB) June 12, 2013

With the warmer weather here for the summer, many Missouri residents may be considering taking advantage and getting out on the water with their boats. Although boating requires a license and in some cases, safety training, there are still dangers that can be faced on the water that differ from on the roads. Unfortunately, over Memorial Day Weekend, the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated seven boating crashes, reports the Daily Journal.

In 2011, there were an astounding 758 boating fatalities, as reported by the National Safe Boating Council. In Missouri, the local agents at ABS Insurance Agency want residents to put safety first before heading out onto the water this season. In the holiday weekend’s accidents, there were two injuries and one fatality. It is the hope of the agency, that with safety first, there will be no further incidents this season.

Before heading out on the water, the local agency reminds Missouri residents to keep some safety tips in mind:

  • Be mindful of the weather – Always check the weather prior to heading out for the day. Summer storms can come on suddenly and be fierce. Darkening clouds and rough changing waters or winds or a sign to get off the water quickly.
  • Designate an assistant skipper – It is important that there is more than one person on the boat who understands how to handle the boat in the event of an emergency. If the primary navigator becomes injured or unable to perform boating operation, it’s important to have someone else who can steer the boat to
