A Cowgirl Doctor Who Spent the Last 30 Years of Her Life Treating Patients With All Kinds of Sickness and Disease Has Now Turned Her Focus to "Boot Out Disease"

Dr. Bonnie Murphy has been a practicing Family Physician for over 30 years in the South Florida area. The cowgirl Doctor grew up in the Midwest (Flint, MI) where she felt fortunate enough to ride horses at a very young age. One could say that this is where she fell in love with the country western theme. After high school, Bonnie moved to Missouri for college and then back to Michigan for medical school. "While in Missouri, everything was country western. If you didn't learn to love it, you were just out of luck," claims Dr. Murphy.

From a love of everything western and a need for a comfortable, stylish pair of cowgirl boots, BonBon Boots were born. Dr. Murphy says, "I started BonBon Boots when I realized there were no lightweight, cool, comfy kicks out there. I wanted a pair of cowgirl boots to wear to work that would allow me to be on my feet all day, seeing patients." (And they needed to match her western scrubs).

Invention is the cornerstone of necessity or so it goes. "Once I got the first batch made, I realized I wanted more from my boots. So I came up with the idea, 'Kicks with a Cause' and carefully matched the different colors associated with a specific disease research organization. For each pair sold, 10% of our proceeds will go to the associated cause based on the color you buy to help 'Boot Out the Disease'... For the Anna, which are pink and denim - the Breast Cancer Research Foundation; The Louise - teal and brown, to Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation; the Black and Tan, or Lindy Lou, to Melanoma Foundation; and lastly, The Marcus - bright orange, supports the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Each of the organizations have been very helpful and continue to give encouragement to the project."

Dr Murphy, 58, says, "I met a lot of patients who love horses and riding and I took that back up at age 50, through one of my patients. One thing led to another, and there you are, able to give back to medicine and patient care, in a completely different way, than practicing medicine."

Dr. Murphy says, "Being diagnosed with sickness or disease is enough to emotionally knock you off your feet. Shock waves can generally be felt through family and friends. One thing that has held true for generations is that when a cowgirl gets knocked off her feet, another is there to pull her up." Murphy feels that "together, anything is possible" and invites you to join her cause.
