800 Leaders in Science, Medicine and Engineering Gather at 6th International IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Neural Engineering Conference

Piscataway, New Jersey (PRWEB) November 06, 2013

Approximately 800 of the world’s brightest minds and most influential players in science, medicine, and engineering will gather at the largest and most anticipated scientific event ever held in the field of neural engineering, organized by international leaders and rising stars from academia and industry.

More than 600 papers were submitted in advance and will be presented during the conference, and attendees can participate in five poster sessions. The paper presentations and poster sessions will allow for in-depth discussion on the research presented, and provide an opportunity for attendees to deeply evaluate the current state-of-the-art and future prospects of the research topic, as well as exchange ideas with presenters and other participants.

Neural engineering draws expertise from neuroscience, neurology, neurosurgery, engineering, computational science, materials engineering, and medical devices. By convening international leaders in these fields, conference organizers hope that innovations in neurotechnology can be developed and applied toward improved medical therapies targeting major global challenges such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, and more.

NER’13 is co-chaired by Bin He and Metin Akay. Plenary Speakers include Terrence J. Sejnowski, Jerrold L. Vitek, Dominique M. Durand, and EMBS President Bruce Wheeler. Conference attendees can also look forward to an illustrious lineup of nearly thirty Symposium Speakers with topics that include Neural Informatics and Modeling, Brain-Machine Interface, Neuroprosthesis, Neural Control and Modulation, and Neural Robotics and Rehabilitation.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to listen to two invited panel discussions:

  •     Funding and Trends in Neuroengineering, moderated by conference co-chair Bin He. Panelists: Yuan Liu from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, Grace C.Y. Peng from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, and Justin C. Sanchez from DARPA.
  •     Translational Neuroengineering, moderated by conference co-chair Metin Akay. Panelists: Mark S. Humayun who will discuss Bioengineered Artificial Retina and provide an Argus II Update, Nitish V. Thakor, who will discuss Translating Revolutionary Prosthesis to Practical Prosthesis, and Greg Worrell, who will discuss Electrophysiological Biomarkers of the Human Epileptogenic Brain.

On Tuesday, November 5th a Pre-Conference Symposium, entitled Problems at the Neural Interface, was held. Neural interface research aims to stimulate neural tissue to treat or assist people with sensory, motor, or other disabilities of neural function such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy. The societal cost of neurological disorders is staggering, and increasingly, scientists working to find solutions to these ailments find themselves frustrated by the lack of growth and application of neural interfacing created by a variety of significant problems. During this Symposium, thirteen invited experts in neural engineering gathered to provide insights, and then discuss and develop a consensus on solutions. Students and post-docs in attendance had the exciting opportunity to contribute to this rapidly growing field of neural engineering.

NER’13 attendees are encouraged to connect via social media by sharing updates and photos to the EMBS Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages and by using the hashtag #NER13.

IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is the world's largest international society of Biomedical Engineers. With more than 46 percent of its 9,100 members residing in some 97 countries around the world, it's a true global connection, providing access to the most fascinating people, practices, information, ideas, opinion and fellowship from one of science's fastest growing fields: biomedical engineering. From formalized mathematical theory through experimental science, from technological development to practical clinical applications, IEEE EMBS members support scientific, technological, and educational activities as they apply to the concepts and methods of the physical and engineering sciences in biology and medicine.
