Gallbladder removal surgery, or cholecystectomy, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the US. This surgery completely removes the gallbladder from the body. While the digestive system can function without the gallbladder, it is less effective. The gallbladder’s main function is to store and concentrate bile, which is produced by the liver. When food containing fat is consumed, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestines so that fats can be digested.
