7 Mile Bridge Death Underscores Victim Rights

(PRWEB) May 02, 2013

Alcohol contributed to a fatal accident on the 7 Mile Bridge last week according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported NBC News on April 18, 2013. The accident claimed the life of 79 year old Floyd Devos, who was sober, and sent two others to the hospital. Car accident attorney Michael Steinger says the accident is a harrowing reminder of why legal representation for accident victims is so crucial.

As reported in the NBC article, the accident happened in the evening as Devos, who was driving southbound, was struck by northbound 23-year-old driver, who had veered into the oncoming lane. Both vehicles struck the bridge walls and the 23-year-old driver's vehicle caught fire. Devos' passenger along with the other driver invovled were both hospitalized in critical condition but have survived; Devos was found dead at the scene.

FHP says DUI charges are pending according to NBC Miami.

Steinger, whose firm works frequently on behalf of the victims of drunk drivers, says the hardest part for the Devos family may still lie ahead.

“The injured passenger was his 76 year old wife,” Steinger said. “My heart goes out to her and all the grieving family members, but I also fear that the medical costs ahead of her will take a toll of their own.”

Steinger said that insurance payouts seldom fully reimburse all the medical costs of an accident victim, and legal action is often needed to get fair compensation.

“There's no doubt her husband would still be alive if the driver hadn't driven drunk,” Steinger said. “I hope that the family will take appropriate legal action and that he will pay the price.”
