The 5th Annual Brittiana “Smile For Life” 5K run/walk marks a special time for the organization as, co-founder Brittiana Henderson, would have been going to her senior prom and graduating this year had she not been diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (a rare form of bone cancer), while later succumbing to leukemia at the tender age of 13 (this year, several scholarships will be given in her memory).
"Smile For Life" was Brittiana's mission for enhancing the quality of life in children suffering from cancer and serious blood disease. In a poem written by Brittiana entitled, "Where I'm From," she expresses the livelihood of herself, and other children suffering from cancer, while never letting her faith stray. "Where I'm from, doubt was not in my vocabulary, for all I had was faith and belief. Where I'm from, you never give up, because life brings challenges and challenges bring strength."
Before the race, as done each year, a special ceremony takes place, which includes: a dedicated song and dance, recognition, honor of patients, and a heartfelt Victory Lap for all cancer survivors, cancer Angeles, and those of all ages who are battling cancer. During this inspirational lap, participants unite by holding hands and walking one lap for themselves, and/or in support of a loved one.
Event entertainment includes a special performance by Interscope recording artist, R&B sensation Mishon, comedian/actor Ricky Harris, Lakers Girls and a host of others. Also, meet NASA astronaut James M. Kelly during a meet and greet while in his space suit. Kelly’s flight experience includes Space Shuttle Missions visiting the International Space Station on STS 102 Discovery and STS-114 Discovery. Kelly is also a retired USAF Colonel.

About BrittiCares International
Jamie and Shirell Henderson founded BrittiCares International after their 10-year-old daughter, Brittiana Rene Henderson, was diagnosed with bone cancer and later leukemia. Brittiana courageously fought the disease, never losing hope or faith, and always exuding love for others. Visiting children in the same hospital, reading to them, and spending time with them, Brittiana would always take the focus away from herself by focusing on others.
Brittiana's battle came to an end January 31, 2007, but not before becoming a forerunner in helping other children with similar challenges, get through their battle with hope, love, and lots of smiles. BrittiCares offers "Imagine Me" Bedroom Makeovers, Celebrity Connections, Patient Party Times, New Patient Care Bags, Blood & Marrow Drives, Financial Assistance, Holiday Adopt a Family & Dinners, Hospital assistance, Scholarships and other uplifting programs that promote comfort and joy during such a difficult challenge.
