31st Annual iaedp™ Symposium Announces Headlining Author for Opening Event
Date:11/18/2016

New York Times best-selling author, Peggy Orenstein, says that when it comes to sexuality, girls today are receiving mixed messages. At the 2017 iaedp Symposium, Orenstein will serve as the event’s opening keynote speaker, exploring how pop culture and pornography sexualize young women in her address “Girls & Sex – Navigating the Complicated New Landscape.”

Orenstein will be speaking at the 2017 iaedp Symposium, scheduled for March 22-26 in Las Vegas at the Green Valley Resort and Spa. Early registration information can be found at http://www.iaedp.com.

While researching her new book, Girls & Sex, Orenstein spoke with more than 70 young women between the ages of 15 and 20 about their attitudes and early experiences with the full range of physical intimacy. The author says that pop culture and pornography creates undue pressure on young women to look and act sexy. These pressures affect both the sexual expectations that girls put on themselves and the expectations boys project onto them. Orenstein adds that girls she spoke to were often navigating between being considered “slutty” or a “prude,” and that their own desires were often lost in the shuffle. Girls, she says, are being taught to please their partners without regard to their own desires.

Peggy Orenstein is the author of The New York Times best-sellers Girls & Sex, Cinderella Ate My Daughter and Waiting for Daisy as well as Flux: Women on Sex, Work, Kids, Love and Life in a Half-Changed World and the classic SchoolGirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem and the Confidence Gap. A contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, Orenstein has also written for such publications as The Los Angeles Times, Vogue, Elle, Time, Mother Jones, Slate, O: The Oprah Magazine, and The New Yorker, and has contributed commentaries to NPR’s All Things Considered and the PBS Newshour. Her articles have been anthologized multiple times, including in The Best American Science Writing. She has been a keynote speaker at numerous colleges and conferences and has been featured on, among other programs, Nightline, CBS This Morning, The Today Show, NPR’s Fresh Air and Morning Edition and CBC’s As It Happens.
