Raising a teenager is a complex process, one that is exacerbated by a teen drug or alcohol addiction. The natural tension of a parent/teen relationship coupled with the addiction issue can make overcoming a child’s substance abuse feel impossible. New Beginnings Recovery Center CEO Johnny Patout leverages his experience as a recovering addict to share tips on how to combat addiction by creating a positive environment for the recovering teen.
As a licensed clinical social worker with more than 30 years in the industry, Patout runs the leading teen residential treatment program in the South, one recognized nationwide for teen rehabilitation. He has guided thousands of teens and parents through the ups and downs of recovery. Following are his three crucial tips for ensuring a successful recovery for an adolescent drug addict:
1. Choose a center with a quality staff. “The training and experience of the staff at the rehabilitation center is the key to a successful recovery for a teen,” says Patout. “Make sure the staff is comprised of not only licensed counselors but also physicians that are certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine as well as experienced psychiatrists. 24-hour nurse coverage has also proved to be an important lifeline for teens and their families.”
2. Get the entire family involved. “Addiction is a family disease,” says Patout. “It affects everyone. When one member of the family succumbs to addiction, family roles evolve – sometimes without family members even realizing it. Participation in the family program during the treatment process is central to recovery. Resolving interfamilial issues within the safety of a treatment facility can make all the difference when the teen returns home.”
3. Continue care. “Recovery doesn’t end when teens leave the treatment facility,” says Patout. “It’s a continual process for both the teen and the family. We always encourage teens and family members to become involved with the 12-step program of Al-Anon. These organizations can provide a tremendous amount of support after treatment ends. Teens should also continue attending after care at their treatment facility. It’s key in preventing a relapse.”
The recovery process can be frightening for teens and their families. Leaning on each other and seeking the help of addiction professionals can provide families with the necessary tools to get through such a troubling time.
