BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Gail Sheehy, noted best-selling author of the book "Passages" and current AARP Caregiving Ambassador, will be the keynote speaker at the third annual Caring Coalition Leadership Council Conference entitled "Handle with Care: Powerful, Compassionate Caregiving." The conference for those working in end-of-life care or administration will take place on Thursday, March 11th at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield from 8:00am to 3:00pm.
Ms. Sheehy will share her personal experience as a caregiver for her husband with more than 800 expected participants from hospitals, nursing homes, hospices and institutions throughout southeast Michigan.
"This conference grows each year alongside the need for quality hospice care," said Rabbi Bunni Freedman, executive director of the Jewish Chaplaincy Hospital Network, and a member of the Caring Coalition. "It specifically addresses the distinctive needs of those care givers who perpetually care for or work with end-of-life patients."
The Conference will also feature presentations from the Henry Ford Health System on "Healthy Living for Care Givers" with Florine Mark, President and Chairman of the Board for Weight Watchers Group, Inc. and Gerard van Grinsven, CEO of West Bloomfield Henry Ford Hospital; Joan Teno, M.D., M.S., a pioneer in palliative medicine, on "Quality Care at Journey's End," clinical psychologist and co-founder of the Center to Advance Palliative Care Excellence (CAPEWAYNE) at Wayne State University Elana Goell-Varkovitzky Ph.D., on "Making Every Visit Count," and a presentation from the Hospice of Michigan on the "My Stories" program which offers patients audio narration of their life stories.
JCHN is one of 43 members of The Caring Coalition, a diverse group of hospices, hospitals and other organizations in southeast Michigan dedicated to educating health care professionals and the general public about issues related to hospice and palliative care.
