McKinney, TX (PRWEB) August 02, 2013
Packard Family Orthodontics has embraced the recent “Stop the Pop” campaign that raises awareness of the ill effects of soda pop, especially for school children.
Soda has highly acidic properties that can erode tooth enamel. This acid can continue to attack the teeth for up to 20 minutes after drinking a soda. Dr. Packard has seen the damage caused by soda far too often in his orthodontic patients. "You add the high sugar content and acidic properties of soda to the normal and sometimes elevated bacterial levels in the mouth with braces and you get decalcification...the precursor to a cavity." reports Dr. Packard.
Not only are soft drinks a bad choice to put in the body, they are problematic for what they push out. Most often, drinking soda pushes out other nutrients and vitamins important to people's diets.
Each day, soda consumption alone adds about 15 teaspoons of refined sugars to the average teenage boy’s body and about 10 teaspoons for the average teenage girl. These amounts roughly equal the recommended daily limits for teens’ sugar consumption from all foods. Drinking too much soda can lead to tooth decay and other health problems, such as osteoporosis, kidney stones and obesity, as well as type 2 diabetes.
Although choosing not to drink soda is the easiest way to avoid the negative effects, there are some ways to prevent tooth decay caused by soda. Steps to prevent tooth decay include rinsing the mouth with water after drinking a soda, making sure to brush/floss twice a day and using a tooth paste with fluoride to help strengthen enamel.
“Stop the Pop” is an education initiative originally developed by the Missouri Dental Association. Packard Family Orthodontics encourages their patients to visit http://www.modental.org/mx/hm.asp?id=stopthepop to find out more about the “Stop the Pop” campaign and how to give up soft drinks for good.
