“M*Modal and Intelligent Medical Objects Partner to Improve Ease of Use of Electronic Medical Records”
Date:3/1/2010

Linking narrative and structured data in medical records through common medical vocabularies

Pittsburgh, PA (Vocus) March 1, 2010 -- M*Modal, pioneer of advanced Speech Recognition and Understanding technology and provider of on-demand Conversational Documentation Services (“CDS”), and Intelligent Medical Objects (“IMO®”), the market leader in clinical interface terminology, have partnered to improve physicians ability to create, review, reconcile, and update clinical diagnoses, problem lists, and medical histories in electronic health records (“EHR”) using a physician friendly workflow powered by narrative dictation.

Michael Finke, CEO of M*Modal, said, “M*Modal and IMO are both passionate about making it easier for physicians to capture their findings in a manner that is expressive while being convenient to use and meaningful, i.e. linked to standard medical terminology. Linking to the IMO® Problem IT™ terminology, the HL7 CDA and CCD based documentation created, augmented, validated and reconciled through our patent-pending workflow used to populate the EHR can now ‘speak the same language’ as the plethora of electronic medical record solutions do that have partnered with IMO.”

M*Modal’s proprietary Speech Understanding solutions transform free form narrative into meaningful and actionable clinical information used to populate the EHR. Incorporating IMO® Problem IT™, a clinical diagnosis and problem vocabulary containing synonyms, acronyms, and lexical variants commonly used by clinicians, M*Modal will further enhance its ability to accurately convert, normalize, and deliver structured and coded information to the EHR. Information coded using IMO® Problem IT™ will be of particular use to the many hundreds of existing IMO customers with EHRs; from Epic, Cerner, Eclipsys, Allscripts, Greenway and other leading companies who use IMO’s terminology to document information entered by physicians using traditional EHR direct data entry methods.

Using M*Modal Speech Understanding technology, physician dictation is transformed into structured data that fulfills EHR data entry requirements for orders, problem list, vital signs, allergies, and medications. This method increases physician adoption of the EHR as no change in familiar dictation habits is required.

“Clinicians using M*Modal Clinical Documentation Services have created tens of millions of clinical documents each year and the number continues to grow. Coding these documents using IMO® Problem IT™ will enrich the content and allow these documents to feed EHRs and clinical repositories with problem focused tags at the point of care”, said Frank Naeymi-Rad, IMO’s CEO.

The current IMO® Problem IT™ data source contains over 190,000 terms and concepts representing over 16,000 ICD-9-CM codes and terms. Incorporating IMO® Problem IT™ will ease the anticipated future adoption of ICD-10-CM, reducing the effort to undertake a major migration of coded health information. IMO® Problem IT™ will incorporate ICD-10-CM when it is required in the U.S.
