$250,000 Grant Awarded to National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization from Technology Grant Program
Date:4/9/2008

n in the United States. In December 2006, Fujitsu announced a grant of more than $12 million in Fujitsu products and services to the U.S. hospice community. These grants of technology to 15 hospice providers and NHPCO were part of a $30 million independently managed and court-supervised technology grant program. The grants of technology made to the hospice industry enhanced the quality of end- of-life care, medical record security, and efficient IT services. With this in mind, NHPCO was chosen again to be the recipient of remaining grant funds.

"I am especially pleased with the fine match between Fujitsu's state-of- the-art technologies and the innovations underway in the hospice industry. It is rewarding to see how well the equipment fit with the needs of each organization and what a significant difference it made for patients and families around the US," remarked Yoshi Masuda, president & CEO, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "Through the many lessons learned from previous grant recipients along with this current grant to NHPCO, we are proud to help NHPCO build capacity and spur innovation throughout the field."

NHPCO, the oldest and largest leadership organization representing hospice and palliative care providers and professionals, reports that more than 1.3 million people received care from hospices in the U.S. last year. With the country experiencing the aging of the baby-boomers, the need for care at the end of life is increasing. The industry has been experiencing consistent growth for many years and providers are required to face new challenges as they serve greater numbers of patients, respond to a wider range of life- limiting diagnoses, and face new professional development and training needs within the field.

"Hospice has the heart and the passion, and we are pleased that the integration of Fujitsu technologies is making a difference for patients and families across the nation," Masuda added.
