Tonometry may be done:
As part of a routine eye examination to screen for increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which increases your risk for glaucoma.
To monitor treatment for glaucoma.

How is it treated?

Tonometry measures the pressure within the eye. This may be done by pressing an instrument against your eyeball, or by blowing a puff of air against your eye. Your eye pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, commonly abbreviated as "mmHg.

Applanation tonometry. This test measures the amount of force needed to temporarily flatten a part of your cornea. Orange dye (fluorescein) is usually put in your eye to help your eye doctor see your cornea. The dye washes out with your tears.
