What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis means that the spine curves from side to side rather than being straight down the back. The spine is made of bones called vertebrae that normally stack one on top of the other in a straight line.

Scoliosis is most often found in patients between 10 and 14 years old, though the condition can also affect infants. In infancy, boys are at higher risk for scoliosis than girls, but girls are at much higher risk for developing scoliosis after age 3.

Scoliosis usually becomes apparent during adolescence, but it sometimes develops earlier. Although the condition may correct itself as a child matures, careful monitoring and, in many cases, treatment, are necessary to avoid severe malformation.
