Pubic lice, also known as crab lice, are tiny parasitic insects that live in coarse body hair. They are yellowy-grey and about 2mm long and can infect people of any age.

Pubic lice are known scientifically as Phthirus pubis. Lice infestation is a common sexually-transmitted condition and is found mostly in adolescents.

Pubic lice usually appear first on pubic hair, but may spread to other parts of the body, particularly if the patient is very hairy. Pubic lice are also sometimes seen on the eyelashes of children born to infected mothers.
