Proteus Syndrome

Proteus syndrome: A disturbance of cell growth including benign tumors under the skin, overgrowth of the body, often more on one side than the other (hemihypertrophy), and overgrowth of fingers (macrodactyly).

Examples of overgrowth syndromes include neurofibromatosis, Sotos syndrome, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome, Weaver syndrome, Proteus syndrome, Sturge-Weber syndrome, and fragile X syndrome.

Both present as an overgrowth of soft tissue and bone, usually in a limb. For many of the very rare combined forms, e.g. Maffucci, Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba, or Proteus syndrome, the vascular anomaly may be a minor component.
