PKD is mainly inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. There have been a few families where it appeared that PKD was inherited in either an autosomal dominant manner or where the carriers of PKD exhibited mild problems with their red blood cells.

PKD is associated with brain aneurysms,diverticula of the colon, and with cysts in the liver, pancreas, and testes. As many as halfof people with PKD also have cysts on the liver.

PKD may also occur as a non-inherited, acquired form as a result of long-term kidney problems, dialysis, and old age.

In PKD, both kidneys become enlarged. Patients experience back pain, blood in the urine, kidney stones, recurring bladder or kidney infections, and high blood pressure.

The adult form of PKD only requires one abnormal gene, which can come from either parent. This type of inheritance is called autosomal dominant. In this situation, the parent with the abnormal gene has PKD.
