Periodontitis

Periodontitis occurs when inflammation or infection of the gums (gingivitis) is untreated or treatment is delayed. Infection and inflammation spreads from the gums (gingiva) to the ligaments and bone that support the teeth.

Yet periodontitis is both preventable and treatable. Although factors such as smoking, heredity, medications and lowered immunity make you more susceptible to gum disease, the most common cause is poor oral hygiene.

If untreated, periodontitis can lead to the loss of teeth. It is the biggest single factor in tooth loss in adults. If treated early in the gingivitis stage, loss of teeth is usually preventable.
