This cramp or pain felt in the calf, thigh or buttock, affects those with peripheral arterial disease (PAD, also known as peripheral vascular disease or PVD) when they walk or exercise.

About half the people with PAD experience no symptoms. About one-third to one-half the people with PAD develop intermittent claudication.

Intermittent claudication may occur in one or both legs and may worsen over time. However, some people complain only of weakness in the legs when walking or a feeling of "tiredness" in the buttocks.

Intermittent claudication is when the blockage occurs in the legs, most commonly in the calf or the foot. It occurs only at certain times, such as after a period of walking, and is relieved by rest.
