What is edema?
Swelling, usually in the feet, ankles, face, eyelids or abdomen, caused by a build-up of fluid. In heart disease, this condition can be caused by congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy or a congenital heart defect.

Edema may be generally described in one of two ways:
Pitting edema -- When you press a finger against a swollen area for 5 seconds and then quickly remove it, an indentation is left that fills slowly.

Angioedema
Definition:
Angioedema is a swelling similar to urticaria (hives), but the swelling is beneath the skin rather than on the surface. The swellings are calledwelts. The welts usually occurs around the eyes and lips.

Angioedema
Acute hives can last from less than a day to up to six weeks, whereas chronic hives last more than six weeks — sometimes occurring for months to years at a time. Often, angioedema and hives occur at the same time.
