Eclampsia


Eclampsia is a Greek word meaning 'bolt from the blue'. It describes one or more convulsions occurring during or immediately after pregnancy as a complication of pre-eclampsia.

Preeclampsia occurs in approximately 5% of all pregnancies. The incidence of eclampsia is approximately 1 out of 2000 to 3000 pregnancies.

Preeclampsia occurs most frequently in first pregnancies. It is more common in women who have diabetes or who are carrying twins. Some women seem to have a strong tendency to develop the disease and suffer from preeclampsia with every pregnancy.
