Cerumen


Cerumen impaction develops when earwax accumulates in the inner part of the ear canal and blocks the eardrum. It affects between 2%-6% of the general population in the United States.

Cerumen impaction typically presents with outer ear fullness, itchiness, and hearing loss, however, mild ear pain may be present if there is an associated out ear infection.

Treatment:
Most cases of ear wax blockage can be treated at home. Mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial drops can be used to soften wax in the ear.

Ear wax, called cerumen by doctors, is produced as a thick liquid by special glands in the ear canal. When the wax is exposed to the air it becomes thicker yet and may even dry into small flakes.
