The machine produces loud thumping and humming noises during normal operation. Ear plugs are usually given to reduce the noise. A technologist observes the entire procedure and may be spoken to through an intercom in the scanner.

Sometimes an abdominal MRI has to be done to determine if the tumor involves any surrounding blood vessels and to determine whether it can be surgically removed.
A chest x-ray may show mass in the chest.
