Young Moscovite Researcher Receives this Year's "Basel Declaration Award for Education in Animal Research"

BASEL, Switzerland, July 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

The Basel Declaration presented the Award for Education in Animal Research for the third consecutive year. The award winner, Vladimir Sergeevich Popov from the Moscow State University, will attend a 1-week course at Zürich University for research with animals according to the rules of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine). As head of the animal research laboratory at the Moscow State University, Popov has been given the task of adapting experimental animal research as well as student training to European standards.

He is active in several organizations, which strive to reach European standards in the Russian animal research laboratories and pay particular attention to the wellbeing of the animals.

Popov is an ideal prizewinner in the opinion of the Basel Declaration Society, as he is still young and has a wide circle of influence. He holds a key position, which permits him to implement effectively the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) in Russian animal research laboratories. This is of the utmost concern to the Basel Declaration Society.

The use of animals in biomedical research is unfortunately still essential. However, those animals used in research should suffer as little pain and discomfort as possible. The number of animals used should be confined to the absolute minimum necessary for the targeted acquisition of scientific knowledge. The highest ethical principles of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) are to be applied worldwide. This will enable laboratory animals to live an animal-friendly life and improve considerably the quality of scientific experiments.
