Il y a 10 ans, ce fut le Docteur Xu qui a fait cette découverte, lorsqu'il a été capable d'expliquer comment sa découverte a débloqué le potentiel d'une cellule somatique pour qu'elle puisse devenir une cellule souche pluripotente in situ.

L'utilisation par l'Assemblée des Nobel du terme « déverrouillé » rend sa déclaration fausse car elle suggère que les scientifiques qui ont gagné le Prix Nobel exploitent une capacité inhérente à la cellule somatique pour qu'elle devienne pluripotente par le biais de moyens naturels qui n'altèrent pas l'intégrité de la cellule. Si la découverte des scientifiques récompensés consistait à laisser la cellule somatique intacte et non modifiée, comme c'est le cas du Docteur Xu, alors la déclaration aurait été correcte et juste. Toutefois, la découverte des deux scientifiques consiste de fait en la création d'une cellule modifiée qui n'a rien à voir avec la cellule souche pluripotente du corps humain. L'Académie suédoise a également déclaré que « cette découverte a introduit fondamentalement de nouveaux champs de recherche, et a ouvert de nouvelles opportunités pour étudier les mécanismes des maladies », ce qui est également erroné.
