Dans un résumé publié sur son site Internet et rédigé de concert avec les personnes sélectionnées, l'Assemblée des Nobel a détaillé la découverte des scientifiques. L'Assemblée des Nobel affirme que cette découverte répresente un changement de paradigme dans notre compréhension de la différenciation cellulaire et de la plasticité de l'état differencié. Le résumé continue en déclarant que : « ensemble, Gurdon et Yamanaka ont transformé notre compréhension de la différenciation cellulaire. Ils ont démontré que l'état différencié des cellules, généralement tres stable, peut être déverrouillé car il contient un potentiel pour une reprogrammation de ces dernières en cellules pluripotentes. Cette découverte a fondamentalement introduit de nouveaux champs de recherche, et a ouvert de nouvelles opportunités pour étudier les mécanismes des maladies ».
