Ultralight Histology Develops Reagent Additives for Facilitating Digital Pathology
Date:2/17/2015

Nampa, ID (PRWEB) February 17, 2015

Ultralight Histology (http://www.ultralighthistology.com), a startup company providing a combination of histology consulting services and uniquely engineered products, has developed a paraffin and stain additive to facilitate digital pathology.

Reagents have been developed as additives to paraffin and stains (H&E) in the (1880's) FFPE tissue fixation and processing to prevent tissue artifacts secondary to formalin and shrinkage in paraffin. Paraffin crystals are relatively large normally pushing the tissue into an amorphous inter-crystallin mass. The new digital additive changes the number of nucleation sites to reduce the shrinkage effects of paraffin crystallization.

By increasing nucleation sites, the paraffin crystals are reduced in size thus decreasing the size of tissue extra-crystallin masses and distortions. The stain additives competitively mop up released formaldehyde when staining takes place preventing additional cross-linking of proteins.

This improves the detail in the stained slides by 10-100x, allowing section thickness down to 1 micron. Use of the new digital additive makes microscopy possible at the 200 nanometer diffraction limit and reduces artifacts to a minimal common denominator thus eliminating lab to lab differences in artifacts.

The addition of the digital reagent will facilitate increased efficiency, clarity, and accuracy allowing pathologists to easier view and diagnose cancer.
