The U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention is pleased to announce that Matthew Heyman joined the organization as vice president of external affairs and strategic integration on December 1, 2008.

Rockville, Md. (Vocus) December 1, 2008 -- The U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention is pleased to announce that Matthew Heyman joined the organization as vice president of external affairs and strategic integration on December 1, 2008.

In this role, Mr. Heyman will be responsible for developing and implementing external affairs strategies for USP that support its mission of improving health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods. He will manage outreach to USP's many external constituencies, which include members of the USP Convention, government agencies, international organizations, other standards-setting groups, health care practitioners, news media and the public. Mr. Heyman will oversee USP's government relations, public relations/corporate communications, marketing communications and member and professional relations functions in this newly created position. He will be responsible for creating integrated outreach programs that align with and promote USP's priorities.

Mr. Heyman has more than 30 years of leadership experience in science and technology policy and program management, communications, public affairs and government and business relations. He most recently served as chief of staff at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), directing and overseeing the strategic planning, evaluation and external affairs activities of an agency that works to improve U.S. innovation, trade, security and health and safety. In this role, he led agency interactions with Members of Congress and other policy makers, news media, the public and others.

Before assuming the role of chief of staff in 2003, Mr. Heyman held a number of high-level positions within NIST and its parent agency, the U.S. Department of Commerce. For more than a decade, he was chief of public and business affairs at NIST, directing its communications activities through many high-profile projects including the federal building and fire investigation of the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy. Previously, he was communications advisor to the deputy secretary of the Department of Commerce; acting director of public affairs for the Technology Administration at the Department of Commerce; and chief of media liaison at NIST, which was the National Bureau of Standards at the time. He began his career as a reporter and editor for several engineering magazines.

"We are very pleased to have Mat join USP's senior management team," said Roger L. Williams, M.D., USP executive vice president and CEO. "His broad range of experience and expertise in science and technology areas will be a major asset to USP as the organization continues to expand its activities to improve the health of patients worldwide through good quality medicines, dietary supplements and food ingredients. I look forward to working with him as we strive to positively impact national and international public health."
Mr. Heyman holds a master's degree in science, technology and public policy from the George Washington University and a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and English from the State University of New York, Albany.
