The Holistic Sanctuary Raises Alarm About Teenage Drug Addiction
Date:11/4/2013

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 04, 2013

The Holistic Sanctuary announces its efforts to increase awareness about the threat of teenage drug addiction, and the abuse of painkillers and sedatives. This statement follows a new study from the University of Michigan, published in Pediatrics®: Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, in which over 10 percent of teens and young adults treated in a hospital emergency room admitted to misusing a prescription painkiller or sedative in the past year.(1) Less than 15% of those who admitted misusing painkillers, according to the report, actually had a prescription for the drug.

This survey of 2,135 young people aged 14 to 20 who were treated in the emergency room at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor is the first study of its kind, which analyzes pediatric misuse of prescription medication in an emergency department setting.(2) Even worse, these findings come just two months after a comprehensive study in the journal The Lancet, declaring painkiller addictions the worst drug epidemic in U.S. history.(3)

Based on additional reporting from Al Jazeera America, this problem is so severe that enough painkillers were prescribed in 2010 (the year for which there is the most recent data) to medicate every American adult around the clock for one month.(4) In this same article, Dr. Andrew Kolodny, President of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing, says: “According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), this is the worst epidemic in U.S. history. CDC has data demonstrating that around the same time doctors began aggressively prescribing these medications in the late 1990s, there have been parallel increases in rates of addiction.”(5)

CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta raises a similar point. “Truth
