The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) and Verus Pharmaceuticals Work Together to Raise Awareness of Food Allergies
Date:10/4/2007

Kathleen Toohill, San Diego FAAN Walk Teen Ambassador. National sponsorship support comes from the generosity of Verus Pharmaceuticals and Dey Pharmaceuticals. For the San Diego walk, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati and Whole Foods La Jolla are platinum sponsors with Whole Foods La Jolla donating over $5,100 from a fundraiser conducted at Whole Foods La Jolla on August 15th. Other San Diego sponsors include Latham & Watkins, Phillips Plastics, Nutricia, Access Communications and Giant Creative at the silver sponsorship level. San Diego Printers and Staylor-Made Communications provided in-kind donations.

Registration for the San Diego Walk for Food Allergy begins at 8:00 a.m. There is no fee to participate and pre-registration is free at http://www.foodallergy.org. At 9:00 a.m., participants will walk a 2-mile route, after which festivities will be held, including the Rad Hatter hat designs, an obstacle course and information from food allergy vendors such as Nutricia, SunGold Foods, No-Nuttin' Foods and Enjoy Life Natural Brands.

"With each step that's taken, we'll move closer to our goal of teaching others about the serious nature of food allergies, and to finding a cure," said Sonya Sheik, San Diego walk chair.

ABOUT FOOD ALLERGIES AND ANAPHYLAXIS

More than 12 million Americans have food allergies, which are the leading cause of anaphylaxis (a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction) outside the hospital setting and result in more than 30,000 emergency room visits each year. Eight foods account for 90 percent of all allergic reactions in the U.S.: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, etc.), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. Food allergy afflicts one in 25 Americans overall, and one in 17 under age 3.
