SmartGene's Services for Faster, More Precise Identification of Bacteria and Fungi to be Used by The Johns Hopkins Hospital
Date:7/30/2009

RALEIGH, N.C., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- SmartGene, Inc., a provider of novel services for the management and analysis of genetic data, today announced that it has entered into an agreement under which The Johns Hopkins Hospital will utilize SmartGene's advanced technology and integrated Web-based services to support more rapid and precise identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens by sequence analysis.

Some bacteria and fungi do not grow quickly or well enough in culture to support timely, accurate identification using conventional microbiology techniques. For this reason, identification based on gene sequencing is often faster and more reliable. SmartGene's technology facilitates efficient identification, following the sequencing of an organism's DNA, by integrating a number of tasks, including sequence editing, alignment, interpretation, creation of dendrograms and reports. DNA sequences are interrogated using SmartGene's broad, constantly updated reference databases, which take account of newly characterized and emerging pathogens. SmartGene's technology allows its customers to manage and more fully utilize their genetic sequence data over time, completely independent of laboratory instrumentation and reagent systems.

"We are delighted to have such a renowned institution adopting our services," said David Ellis, President of SmartGene, Inc. "We shall certainly benefit from the expertise and guidance of the Hopkins scientists, as we evolve our services in microbiology and beyond."
