Winfield, WV (PRWEB) April 01, 2013
Discarded mattresses are clogging the nation’s landfills. Mattress retailers Sleep Outfitters, Mattress Warehouse and Mattress King, in conjunction with Spring Back Recycling, are doing something about it – they’re making sure old mattresses never make it to the landfill.
With a mission of keeping mattresses out of landfills, the stores kicked off a mattress recycling partnership with their Sleep Outfitters Nashville location about a year ago, and have since expanded the partnership to many of their other locations, including Sleep Outfitters, Mattress Warehouse and Mattress King stores in Lexington, Ky., Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio, Huntsville and Birmingham, Ala.
The need to reduce waste and prevent mattresses from ending up in landfills is a worldwide concern. According to the National Geographic website, Green Living, “one mattress takes up 28 cubic feet in the landfill, and is 400 percent less compactable than regular household trash because it's designed to withstand compression.”
Sleep Outfitters, Mattress Warehouse and Mattress King, all owned by parent company Innovative Mattress Solutions, are the only mattress retailers supplying Spring Back Recycling with used mattresses for recycling. By partnering with the organization, the stores will keep mattresses out of landfills while at the same time helping to create jobs for people who are challenged to secure employment, such as homeless and formerly incarcerated men, in an effort to help them get a fresh start.
“When Spring Back breaks down the mattresses, they use the components for other necessary goods,” said Kim Brown Knopf, CEO, Sleep Outfitters, Mattress Warehouse and Mattress King. “It’s gratifying to know that by melting the metal in the springs and salvaging the filler and other components, we’re helping to create new items for others. Perhaps as importantly, we’re doing our part to reduce the disposal of mattresses to landfills.”
Spring Back Recycling began in Nashville, Tenn., through a partnership between Belmont Church’s Isaiah 58 Ministries and Belmont University’s student-led Enactus (formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise) organization. The Belmont students’ Spring Back mattress recycling business model was presented at the Enactus World Cup competition in Washington, D.C. last September, winning first place out of submissions by students from more than 1,700 universities in 38 countries.
“Spring Back Recycling is an ideal triple bottom line social enterprise, providing an economic, social, and environmental benefit,” said John Gonas, Belmont professor who serves as an Enactus faculty advisor. “Not only do the men in Isaiah 58 have access to sustainable employment and small business training, but hundreds of thousands of pounds of solid waste are being diverted from area landfills. More than 98 percent of all mattress and box spring
components are recycled, while the program pays for itself. We are very grateful for the partnership with Sleep Outfitters, Mattress Warehouse and Mattress King.”
While some states have introduced legislation to deal with discarded and recycled mattresses, the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) is proposing federal legislation to address the problem.
