Sepha's Blue Dye Test Alternative Brings ‘Complete Automation' To Pharma-Packaging Quality Assurance
Date:11/27/2009

A mechanised blue dye test alternative is helping bring complete automation to packaging quality assurance one step closer for pharma-companies. It is a non-destructive, non-contact leak testing machine developed by Sepha for use with blister packs and it has already been installed in several local and global pharma-companies such as Sanofi-Avenis and Zydus-Cadilla to address quality assurance and productivity improvements on the packaging line. Blisterscan is an affordable alternative to the messy blue dye test utilising state of the art scanning technology to test for leaks in blister-packs of drugs without the need for pack disposal, thus reducing waste and manpower requirements.

Belfast, Ireland(Vocus) November 27, 2009 -- An alternative to the blue dye test is helping bring complete automation to the quality assurance process one step closer for pharma-companies. It is a non-destructive, non-contact leak testing developed by Sepha for use with blister packs and it has already been installed in several local and global pharma-companies such as Sanofi-Avenis and Zydus-Cadilla to address quality assurance and productivity improvements on the packaging line.

Blisterscan is an affordable alternative to the messy blue dye test utilising state of the art scanning technology to test for leaks in blister-packs of drugs without the need for pack disposal, thus reducing waste and manpower requirements. BlisterScan can detect and locate leaks as small as 7 microns across a full cross-section of the entire blister web. Blister packs are scanned by a laser beam both before and after a vacuum is applied. The difference between these scans is used to categorise the size of the hole in the blister pack. It identifies the precise pocket which leaks - ideal for testing alongside blister lines to speed up diagnosis of any problems and preventing the production of excess rejects. It is a non-destructive, clean, dry process so any packs that pass the test can be returned to the production line. BlisterScan can be fully validated, unlike the Blue Dye test, where the operator has to make a subjective decision whether a pack passes or fails. The alternative Methylene blue dye test by comparison also renders any tested blister packs unsaleable.

Packs that fail the test can have the contents emptied for repackaging using one of Sepha’s de-blistering machines such as Press Out Universal which is ideal for valuable product because of its unique, gentle action for fragile tablets and child resistant packs.

“Pharma companies are looking to manufacture products with minimum human interference to follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) standards. This calls for the need for complete automation. Sepha is focusing on bringing automation to the packaging quality control process. This benefits the customer by saving of manpower, increased production and reduction in packaging waste,” explained Sepha CEO Aubrey Sayers.

Sepha will be at P-MEC which takes place at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai on 1-3 December in conjunction with its India agent Parle Technologies. You can visit them and see their range of deblistering and pharmaceutical leak testing machines in the Bombay Exhibition Centre Hall No.6, B-42 & C-42.
