The top 10 global biotechnology companies recorded revenues of $56.7 billion during 2008, an increase of 12.6% over FY2007. The operating profit of these companies was $15.1 billion in FY2008, an increase of 12.1% over FY2007. The net profit was $10.5 billion during FY2008, an increase of 10.3% over FY2007.

The average operating margin of the top 10 companies was 17% in FY2008 as compared with that of 20.2% in FY2007. The net margin was 10.3% in 2008 as compared with that of 14.9% in 2007.

Since 2003, the global biotechnology market has witnessed a significant growth across different geographies. However, the market growth is expected to decelerate for next few years due to increased number of patent expiries and intensifying competition from biosimilars.
