Prototype Software from Elekta's Research Group Takes First Place in Two Autosegmentation Contests at MICCAI 2010

ATLANTA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Elekta continues its autosegmentation domination with first place rankings in two recent challenges for new prototype software. The top finishes were for lung, as well as head & neck at the 13th International Conference on Medical Imaging and Computing Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2010), September 20-24, Beijing, China. The contest was part of the Medical Image Analysis for the Clinic: a Grand Challenge workshop held in conjunction with MICCAI.

The goal for contestants in the Head & Neck Autosegmentation Challenge 2010 was to quantitatively compare fully automatic methods for segmenting the structures of the parotid glands. Elekta's prototype software won for the validation and for the paper: Automatic Segmentation of Parotids in Head and Neck CT Images Using Multi-Atlas Fusion.

In the Evaluation of Methods for Pulmonary Image Registration 2010 (EMPIRE10) contest, participants were to provide a platform for in-depth evaluation and fair comparison of available registration algorithms for this application. Elekta's prototype software won for the validation and for the paper: Feature-constrained Nonlinear Registration of Lung CT Images.

"We are delighted to once again gain recognition for refinements to our highly regarded prototype software," says David Murphy, Director of Marketing, Business Area Software Systems. "It has been Elekta's tradition to integrate new award-winning functionality into future Atlas-Based Autosegmentation (ABAS) releases, so we expect to add these methods to ABAS as soon as possible."

ABAS deforms atlases of anatomy previously defined on a reference image onto a new patient image, creating a new structure set fit to the patient anatomy. The benefit is enhanced planning efficiency. With its deformable registration algorithms, ABAS saves physician and dosimetrist time by automatically contouring new image sets based on anatomy defined in the atlas. Users may further edit and refine the new image sets.
