nstudien von Medikamenten, die im Rahmen dieses Wissensvakuums entwickelt wurden, und an der damit abnehmenden Zahl neuer Medikamente, die zum allgemeinen Einsatz behördlich zugelassen werden.

Zur Unterstützung der Entwicklung verbesserter Therapien konzentrieren sich Produktentwickler bisher auf physische Messungen des Herzens und seiner Arterien zur Ermittlung des Krankheitsverlaufs und Prognose klinischer Effekte. Nun wurde festgestellt, dass biologische Informationen, zum Beispiel Veränderungen der Biomarker in den Koronararterien, eine klarere Methode zur Messung der Erkrankung und Behandlung bieten. Bisher war es sehr schwierig, diese Informationen schnell, zuverlässig, sicher oder überhaupt zu erhalten.

PlaqueTec hat in den letzten 5 Jahren mit führenden Ärzten, Ingenieuren und Wissenschaftlern an der Entwicklung des LBS gearbeitet. Das LBS kann neben Standardgeräten in einem Katheterlabor eingesetzt werden und ermöglicht es dem Arzt, in einer stark kontrollierten Art und Weise mehrere Blutproben direkt vom Ort der Erkrankung in einer Koronararterie zu entnehmen. Während der ersten Sicherheitsstudien mit dem Gerät beobachteten PlaqueTec und seine Partner bei Papworth lokale Erhöhungen der Biomarker in erkrankten Herzkranzarterien. Diese Biomarker hätten nicht mit traditionellen peripheren Blutabnahmen festgestellt werden können.  Dies erhöht die Wahrscheinlichkeit dafür, dass Forscher aus der Pharmaindustrie in Zusammenarbeit mit PlaqueTec in der Lage sein werden, neue Behandlungsziele zu identifizieren und festzustellen, ob bestimmte medikamentöse oder operative Eingriffe einen positiven Effekt auf die koronare Herzerkrankung und damit auf die langfristige Patientengesundheit haben.
