New Case Study Shows How Product Inspection Technology Facilitates CPG Growth
Date:10/2/2017

The burgeoning consumer-packaged-goods (CPG) marketplace is predicted to double in size from $8 trillion in 2014 to $14 trillion by 2025. (1) As CPG brand-owners continue to outsource manufacturing and packaging functions, growth opportunities for reputable co-packers are abundant. In Canada, it is estimated that 60% of all household cupboards contain a nationally-branded product packaged by Rex Pak - the largest independent co-packer of dry powdered goods.

Rex Pak attributes the success in growth to its expertise in blending powdered and dry bulk products to produce packaged food including rice, pasta, soup powder mixes and sugar - all to a brand’s exact requirements. The company also prides itself on being flexible to be able to handle a range of products at one time and its tried-and-tested, rigorous Quality Assurance (QA) processes.

A full suite of Mettler-Toledo product technology solutions facilitates the high level of QA needed throughout the production process from chemical analysis of powders in the lab to inspecting the final package. This ensures compliance with food safety standard: Safe Quality Food Institute (SQF) Level 2 certification. Plus, the company has met Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HAACP) guidelines and individual retailer QA requirements. Here, is an overview of the technology which provides QA:

End-to-End Quality Assurance
In the Lab: Mettler-Toledo Titrator Excellent T5 system analyses chemicals to ensure the concentration matches customers’ specifications. Additional Mettler-Toledo lab equipment conducts further analysis and sampling testing.

During Production: Metter-Toledo checkweigher’s provide high precision weighing of pouch fills in real-time.

End of Line: A checkweigher checks the final weights. This is complemented by three integrated Mettler-Toledo x-ray systems (1 x X33 and 2 x X36) to inspect filled, sealed and weighed bags for unwanted contaminants and complete product integrity.

The average person will consume several CPGs every day. The CPG market is strong however competition is high due to market saturation and the savvy consumer switching brands due to low prices. As such, flexibility for brand owners to provide new ranges – and quickly – is key. This drives co-packers such as Rex Pak to adopt x-ray systems such as the X36 as the technology is ideal to inspect multiple product types. However, as more products are produced throughout the globe more product recalls are recorded by food safety authorities therefore, to protect business growth proving due diligence is essential. The traceability capabilities of the product inspection systems enable Rex Pak to have complete QA management across multiple production lines in real-time. The technology offers built-in monitoring statistics, real-time process analysis, full data capture and, if Rex Pak is required to prove that its QA processes have been carried out to optimum levels, the information is easily retrievable.
