Lung Institute Supports Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day with Unique Plea to the Public
Date:9/5/2013

Tampa, Florida (PRWEB) September 06, 2013

In honor of Global Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day, Tampa-based stem cell provider Lung Institute is asking the general public to participate in an event called A Breathless Moment.

When: Saturday, September 7th at 1 p.m.
Why: The time of 1 p.m. was chosen to represent living with the capacity of only one lung, and the exercise of holding one’s breath as long as possible is to show non-sufferers what it feels like to live with this disorder every minute of every day.

What you may not know about pulmonary fibrosis:

  •     The disease affects approximately 200,000 people in the US.
  •     An estimated 40,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, with no known cause.
  •     PF can strike anyone, but the disease tends to affect men more than women and usually occurs between the ages of 50 and 70.
  •     PF is four times more common than cystic fibrosis, yet it remains virtually unknown to the public, many policymakers, and many primary care physicians.

“Pulmonary fibrosis is a debilitating disease that leaves sufferers with limited options,” said Lynne Flaherty, Director of Operations at Lung Institute. “At the Lung Institute, we’re not only providing innovative treatments for pulmonary fibrosis in Tampa that aid in the restoration of damaged lung tissues, we’re also striving to raise awareness about all the different types of lung diseases and available stem cell treatments for lung disease.”
