Looking Older Than You Are May Have Little to Do With Wrinkles
Date:7/22/2009

Fitzgerald began her experience with Sculptra a number of years ago while working in the Dermatology Department at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. She developed and oversaw the clinic for HIV lipoatrophy, the condition for which Sculptra was first used in the U.S. After man hundreds of patient visits and remarkable results, Dr. Fitzgerald's research became focused on the cosmetic applications for restoring facial volume deficiencies caused by age and genetic structure. Sculptra, as a bio-stimulatory agent, acts over time to create self-production of new collagen in the skin. It is the only recognized product to have this effect.

In her presentation Dr. Fitzgerald noted that identifying early facial imbalance is key to both correction and prevention. The worse it gets, the worse it gets, is how she phrased the dilemma. "By correcting early with smaller volume treatments, you can slow the aging process and allay the need for major procedures later on. It really is a 'worse begets worse' scenario because once the skin begins to lose its support system through natural collagen breakdown, a cascade effect occurs."

With dozens of her patient photos and two close-up live feed demonstrations, Dr. Fitzgerald held rapt attention of the conference attendees and her fellow panel members. "Correct placement is critical," she explained. "You can find the breaks in the facial plane with certain manipulations of the skin and a really intense visual examination of the highlights and shadows that skin contours create. The balance of convex and concave contours makes the difference between looking older - or looking younger."

Dr. Fitzgerald is a close medical colleague of Europe's Dr. Danny Vleggar, considered to be "the" name in the Sculptra revolution in Europe where the product has been used for cosmetic purposes for 10 years. Both experts are often linked in research, training and video training modules for Derm
